While Michelle and I (and Ben and Henry!) were traveling to Big Sur, we had the rad opportunity to stay at and photograph Big Sur Getaway. The place is AWESOME, you guys. Caroline and Werner are wonderful hosts, and their property is so beautiful. They have several vintage trailers (airstream and otherwise), well decorated and appointed for a fun glamping experience. While we were there, Caroline also organized an outdoor dinner with bay area chef Tina Dang, and we took photos of the event! Wildly good food, equally stunning views, and the warmest and most genuine company. It was such a cool evening! And I would really recommend a get away here! Thank you so much Caroline, Werner, Tina, and everyone! All photos by Michelle and I, Rad + In Love!

I promised myself I wouldn't post too many family sessions in a row, but it being world breastfeeding week,  can't help myself! Let me explain. While I was in LA for a wedding a couple of weekends ago, I snuck in a quick and casual shoot with one of my FAVORITE little families; Christina, and her wife Patty, and their sweet baby Beatrice. Well- Bea is in this phase where she wants to nurse while being read to. It is kind of adorable. (If a wee bit of a nuisance to her patient mama.) And since we were happy to sit back and let her direct the morning (rather than try and pose a busy toddler), that is what we have a lot of photos of! Which I loooooove. I am so happy to be able to share a positive image of (what our country considers extended) breastfeeding, and I think it is important to be vocal/upfront about breastfeeding. The more people are exposed to it, the more normal it becomes and our society accepting of it, the more woman are likely to be successful in meeting their breastfeeding goals. (Here is some reading on the subject). In other news, how AWESOME is Bea's drum set? Pickin up skills from her  ma! RAD. Thanks guys, for letting me be a part of this morning! PS All Images are totally suitable for work!

As usual, I am available to photograph YOUR family in Southern California. Email me at desertfete (at) gmail (dot) com.

This opinion piece bu Tim Kreider in the NYTimes, The 'Busy' trap, resonated with me crazy hard. I can relate not just to almost every point he hits on, but in most cases from each side. For example;

I recently wrote a friend to ask if he wanted to do something this week, and he answered that he didn’t have a lot of time but if something was going on to let him know and maybe he could ditch work for a few hours. I wanted to clarify that my question had not been a preliminary heads-up to some future invitation; this was the invitation.

Ouch. Especially when I was working nearly full time and studying architecture full time, I dished this out more than I care to recollect.  Now, as a gal who is regularly spending her mornings idly at the park with a baby and a cup of coffee, it hurts how often I receive it. Of course, this is kind of a forced down time. Were it not for Henry I would be editing photos, blogging, at a job full time, cleaning the kitchen counters, who knows. Point is this idle time leaves a LOT of things nagging at me to be done. But still. I am using it as an opportunity to shift my life more into what I would like it to be. Where I can make time for myself, my friends, my family, for nothing. Where it isn't even an issue of "making" time, but simply choosing that that is what our time is made up of, if that makes sense. Sure, we all have to make a living. But there is a balance, right? I have given a LOT of thought to this lately, like Kreider;

I did make a conscious decision, a long time ago, to choose time over money, since I’ve always understood that the best investment of my limited time on earth was to spend it with people I love.

Cheers to that.

There was a request for photos from that time that I lived for a few months like a nomad on the beaches of Hawaii. Which I thought was a great idea. So I dug up a bin of old photos in effort to share. Unfortunately in my disorganized hoarding mess I could only find a handful of black and whites. These are those.

But then I decided to share some of my favorites that I came across from those years in general. These are all pretty much from 16 to 19, maybe 20? I was obsessed with cross processing, obv. And my wide angle lens. I don't have a scanner, so bare with me, I took photos of photos. Right there in the top left, that is me. I think we were en route to Colorado.

It's not that all of these are the best photos, but I love them for the memories; pictures of people i haven't seen for the better part of a decade, the emotions they evoke- of the freedom of youth. Road trips. Hot summers. Besties. New places. New experiences. I loved rifling through these, I hope you also enjoy!
