There are 3 things I would like to point out/discuss about this home tour, featured in Dwell, found via Simple Lovely.

1) it is my (relatively modest, given my profession) dream that we will one day be able to knock out a whole wall in the living room to open up to a side/back yard/deck, like above. (Of course first we need to, you know, own a house.)

2) This appears to be a very adult, stylish, mattress only on the floor. Just sayin.

3) Teepee and wall of records? Come on.

That is basically my dream house. My grandma owns (but does not live in) a 1950s Streng Home (sort of like the discount Eichler). My husband and I contemplate what it would take to get her to sell it to us sometimes. It needs a ton of work, but already has the wall of sliding doors, and everything original.

  2. I am in love with this whole house. Wall to wall records, teepee, natural light, cute kids playing guitar. Does the life come with it?

  3. Isn't it kind of the ultimate irony that as an architect, it's tough to make enough money to pay for any of the houses you design? Kills me. We're cautiously hopeful, but also aware that we may rent forever, given our chosen professions.

  4. I saw this on someone else's blog as well and I would kill for a collection of records like that :)

  5. wow my husband would die of joy if he had a wall of records like that!

  6. I feel like there's nothing wrong with having a bed on the floor in terms of looks, if you do it right. But in the process of researching beds, I went to Soaring Heart in Seattle and they brought up ventilation and mold issues. So now I'm firmly on the side of bed on a platform, even if it is a really low one.

  7. That record wall is off the hook and having your room open up to the outdoors is even better.

  10. i second your modest home dream. Sometimes modesty is all we can really wish for, isn't it?

and i like the indoor baby tepee, even if esb doesn't. :)

  11. Right??!!!!

I just spent a little less than an hour (I kid you not) staring at this particular spread in Dwell on Tuesday. There is something pretty amazing going on with the color scheme and materials used too, don't you think?

  12. Super cool spread. Thanks for sharing. I just can't get over the immensity of that record collection!! They must have every genre of music in there..

yeahh, they make for sweet pictures, but can you deny how contrived dwell can be? if i walked into a pristine living room to see a kid playing in the teepee amongst the backdrop of records, i would think something was off.

on that note, check out http://unhappyhipsters.com/
it's a fun blog that completely embraces the weird (albeit gorgeous) pictures featured in dwell.

  15. hmmmmm. i don't think i'm with you. i'm pretty sure that is the juxtaposition our house will be, should it ever include a child. we arn't going to put away the records, nor banish the kids (and all their artifacts) to a specific part of the house?

    ReplyDelete
  16. but of course photo shoots are styled. ;)

  17. Yeah, our house will be similar. Just replace records with books. Kids and their stuff should be a part of a home, not just a room in one.

And our mattress is on the floor. I don't think it's remotely crack-denny. But I could be wrong.
