Ben and I are really hoping to squirrel away enough money this year to take an international trip. Between new car & student loan payments kicking in, it will be tough. But hopefully with the help of curbing my consumer instincts (and limiting Ben's intake of fancy beers) we can do it. Maybe. We keep flip flopping between going to Japan where my Dad, the airline pilot, is based, and going to a few places in Europe. (Spain? Paris? Morocco?)

But some of the food/cafe images on ii-ne-kore are killing me. I wasn't sure what our food options would be like as vegetarians in Japan. Apparently they would be just fine.

Speaking to me even more is the image of this cafe, in Kyoto I think. When I think of Japan I usually envision the fast, urban, concrete nature of places like Tokyo, driven by technology. Of course I want to visit Tokyo, but seeing the softer side of Japan is really appealing to my heart.

Why can't we take two trips? or 3? or 9?

  3. Morocco - no question. Went two years ago, can't wait to go back. Outside of airfare, it's way less expensive than anything on the continent. Food, culture, architecture will blow your mind.

Ohh, why hello! First off, I've been reading your bog for a bit, and I Adore it, capitol A. Bravo! Second, this post is really lovely. Not to push my blog on you, but I have been dreaming oh so much about Kyoto this past week, too, and am trying desperately hard to not keep blogging about it. I did put together some flickr finds (here, if you'd like: http://owl-and-peacock.blogspot.com/2010/02/kyoto-dreaming.html) of Kyoto in one post. It's such a lovely city *in my dreams*, I can only guess it's a gazillion times lovelier in person!

  5. i've had similar misgivings about japan, but i think you're right - vegetarians are more than fine (with a bit of planning). also, excuses to eat japanese candy (to keep one's strength up *just in case* veggie options are scarce, you know) are never a bad thing.

go go globe-trotting savers! we mean to do the same this year in order to take a trip to iceland (which, speaking of places where vegetarians would scramble...!). it's been my plan for about five years, really, and it's time it actually happened. maybe we can be budget buddies?

  8. oh i would love to wander into that cafe and take tea with a read. it looks so thoughtful and elegant. i bet there's someone tucked in the corner right now, sipping on some delightfully subtle green tea from a cute cup with no handle.

Oh see I vote for Tokyo every time. Have been a few times with work and was a complete suprise to what was expecting. It looks like that pic was taken somewhere near Nakameguro by the Canal...an amazing place full of the best little shops/cafes along tree-lined streets, most of which adopt a lo-tech, organic feeling, especially unique when set into identikit Modernist brick buildings. Calm, green, organic was not what I was expecting to find in Tokyo...but it is all of those things!

  10. I too have been to Japan and can say it was one of my all time favorite places! the people are so incredibly warm and inviting, (kindness has no language barriers!) We went to several cities in Japan and even Tokyo has the most amazing green spaces and sweet crooked little alleys to spend your days exploring. So much history there it is such an exciting blend of old and new!
