After years of talking about putting our floor on the bed, and a year of co-sleeping, we took the plunge and did it. (Even though we actually have a rad platform already that our friend help us build.) Oh well. It was just the safest and most convenient thing for our current sleep situation. And we like it! Henry is particularly fond of it. He was able to climb off of the bed, but now he can also climb on it. He runs in and jumps on and wiggles around for cuddles. It is too cute.

The situation is dying for some sort of headboard. Especially because there is an outlet at the head of the bed that we really need to use, and I simply need to cover that shit up. (we try to keep things as Henry friendly as possible.) But. The bed probably will not be on the floor indefinitely, so it needs to be a kind of cheap quick fix. Maybe I can get a hold of some reclaimed wood? Too rustic?

What my heart really wants is a big cushioney one like at the ace, or, you know, the brick house.

Any other brilliant ideas?

  1. Two sheets of high quality plywood. Reinforce with braces on back. Staple-gun memory-foam mattress topper to it. Then upholster with some heavy duty (stain-resistant?) duck cloth (a là ACE blankets) or even a painter's drop cloth. Drill holes in a pattern, then either button or rivet through to back. Pretty fool-proof DIY soft-but-supportive minimalist quilted headboard, BOOM.

  2. Awesome. So much safer. If you look at my IG pics of Maja on our bed, you'll see the headboard that Ivo made. I love it and it was so easy. He also made a small platform. I love it!

  4. My husband had his bed on the floor before we got married. We just bought a new bed with a giant box spring, so it's as tall as I am. I personally enjoy it, but there is a part of me that wishes it was on the floor. I'm a 30 year old that still runs and jumps into bed....even more exciting when its ground level.
Show us the rad platform sometime. We are wanting to build something for ours sometime.

    1. I just realized you linked to the pillow headboards. My husband made something sort of like that and filled it with mattress foam scraps from a local store. So comfy, never thought of making a headboard out of it!

  5. your floor on the bed? ;)

I kid, I kid... but seriously, I love this. we had our bed on the floor for years, mainly because we were too broke to buy a bedframe. and right before we moved we'd packed everything up by our mattress and slept on the floor again. it's so nice, and a bit refreshing, to roll out of bed, literally! the ones at the Ace are so nice. {those kids!! geniuses, I tell you} I bet you could sew one up pretty easily as it's just a big box.

  7. i'd love to have our bed on the floor, but we really NEED to use the underneath part for storage right now. the good news is that cheech knows how to get down safely the other day. i learned that about a week ago when i heard her playing in our bedroom after waking up from her nap. of course, i was expecting to find her perched on our bed like i always do, but instead i found her PULLING ALL HER COTHES OUT OF HER DRESSER. she is the craziest baby.

anywho, i'm way down for the reclaimed wood. as long as the rest of your place isn't too rustic (which it isn't), then i think it would be lovely. i don't know what's going on at your house, but with a cat and a messy baby, our upholstered furniture looks like total shit right now.

    1. H can get down safely, but i am more worried about sleepy rolling. he wakes and crawls in his sleep sometimes.

cat isnt allowed to sleep in our room anymore cause he is too noisy. :(
