We have been watching To Kill A Mockingbird. (We can't get through a whole movie in one evening.)

It does a few unexpected things.....

1) rips at my heartstrings for a porch. the porches on this set are epic. have we ever discussed my love of a good porch? i fucking love porches.

2) rips at my heartstrings for hot summer nights. (almost non existent in san diego, even when we do get a real summer.)

3) makes me want to live somewhere a little... quaint? where kids can ramble around the neighborhood....

4) makes me further reconsider our one child only policy. (something that usually happens when we watch united states of tara, which always makes me feel funny that a show about a cookoo crazy family makes me want two kids.)

my conclusion? we move to the south and have two babies and sit on our porch all summer long.

  1. oh atticus/gregory peck (he's one of my "old actor" crushes). i LOVE that movie, love the book even more. i even told my husband our first daughter will be named atticus, if he doesn't mind. :)

i know how you feel about that whole list. seeing the old craftsmen homes all over san diego make me want a porch so bad. i have a friend in la mesa who has a house with a wrap-around porch and we hang out there with cool drinks in the summer, i love it. i always wonder about multiple children too, which might not be a choice with us since twins run in his family. hahaha!

  2. You can find all of the above in Little Rock, Arkansas, where I live. Come on down! P.S. Great movie. And one of my all-time favorite books. P.P.S. Does this mean you're naming the baby Atticus or Scout? Boo or Dill? Calpurnia?

you kind of already know how i feel about 'to kill a mockingbird'. it is my favorite book, one which i crawl inside of and feel so at home. it's literally almost identical to the story of my mother's childhood, and one which breaks my heart and makes me feel whole again each and every time i read or see it.

the south would be pleased to have you.

  5. but dude! there were like, only 10 beach worthy days last year! (i only like the beach- or rather i only fully appriciate the beach for the amount we PAY for it, when it is warm enough for swimming...)

  8. totally get the one kid thing, don't know that i'll even have any, but as an only child i thought i'd give you this insight... it was totally awesome until i hit about 30, now the thought of being alone after my parents die really sucks. just sayin...

  9. When I have my ranch, there will be a wrap-around porch. Or 2 porches, if for some reason the wrap-around type won't work out. And fans because it gets hella hot here.

To second Naurnie, the South would love you. So would Texas. (We're our own geographic region.) And we have beaches, too! Please disregard that they're covered in oil...

  11. Oh man. Remember when I asked you about how you feel about San Diego? With babies and all that?

It's because we are ALSO trying to eventually find this hot quaint porch-y place with kids rambling around, etc. We basically want to live in the south too, I guess. Drats.

Oh, how I love To Kill a Mockingbird. I was just in Germany and bought it for my fiance in German (because it is his favourite book and he is taking German classes). And I found it so lovely that they actually call it a Nightingale, not a Mockingbird. Random piece of info for the day!

  15. Love that screen grab. Gregory Peck was so great in this movie. Ugh, just the best.
Yes, the South dose rock in that way. I lived in Athens, GA for 7 years and it has all of those things in spades. It is a pretty cool town really. I had a love affair with it for quite some time.
    Cheers!!

  16. Hot summer nights are one of the things I miss most now that I live in LA. Humidity is unbearable during the day, but wonderful at night.

Also re: one child policy. There are certainly perks to being the only kid in the house, but from an outsider's perspective, I think the perks of having a medium/big family win out (assuming it's feasible). I'm always jealous of friends that grew up in a house full of kids.

  17. I would love if you would write more about the one child policy thing.

I love TKAM and would totally name a son Atticus, but N is not on board.

Hot summer nights and porches would be cool too.

  21. PS Lets move somewhere hot together! I miss hot summer nights so much. Oddly, in my neighborhood in Brooklyn there were so many porches, and so many hot summer nights, that the staged an on-site To Kill A Mockingbird on my street, that was exactly right. And something like 2,000 people showed up.
