All right already! After your comments, posts like this in my google reader, and chatting with a gardening coworker (who assured me that kale, radishes, lettuce, zucchini and tomatoes would all be happily planted right now) I'm gonna do it. Today after work we are headed to City Farmers (thanks Shelly!) then Saturday it's plantin time!

I will let you know how it goes.

  5. sooo much to catch up on over here after two weeks of blog withdrawal. do you know how much we miss the desert? tears. lots of tears. so you're like my lifeline now. no pressure.

mkay, some advice, if you want it, about growing tomats late in the season in southern california:

at this point in the summer you might as well buy a few mature plants with established roots for right-now-tomatoes and a few younger plants to provide late summer fruit. clip the bottom branches off the mature tomato plants you buy, bury the bottom 1/4 of the plant, and prune any branches that don't have blossoms or fruit. keep thinning and pruning aggressively every week and all the energy will go into fruit production instead of leafy growth. when the the tomats start to grow out of the blossoms cut way back on watering; you'll have sweeter, more flavorful tomatoes and they won't split.

  7. Yay! Don't forget your herbs. Cilantro and parsley can be started from seed and will sprout up in no time at all. Sage + rosemary + mint + basil + thyme work better if you buy a starter plant.

Oh, and get a nice watering pot. I got one and my watering went way up and it turns out that stuff grows better when you water it sometimes. Although you guys have an actual yard so you probably also have an actual hose.

  9. DO it do it do it!!

Rachel is right. Herbs are a must. I NEVER have to buy them ever. It's so satisfying and delicious to throw huge heaps into whatever you're making. I would grow scallions (if you use them regularly) and jalepeƱos too. And oregano. I love oregano in things.

And since we in southern california haven't even started summer yet, I think you'll be planting at the perfect time.
