Image from the awesome...

It's finally official. Headed to DC for a week (work), leave on Sunday. I won't have much time (just what I can squeak in in the evenings), but still would like some suggestions. Best places? Museums? Food? I'm staying right by Dupont Circle, walking distance fun a big plus.

  1. YOU ARE RIGHT BY MY FAVE DC RESTAURANT

Check out Bistrot du Coin in dupont circle, where they have insanely cheap and delicious french food (including six billion different kinds of mussels, if you like mussels)

There's a kickass paper store around there somewhere which you'll see if you wander--one level down from the street. Also Teaism; http://www.teaism.com/ (greatest place round there to sit and work/read)

Kramer is also a good bookstore... have fun! xo

  3. Dupont is a great neighborhood for food - and pretty much everything in DC is within walking distance. Bistro Du Coin is great, as is Uni Sushi on P Street. Eola has amazing dessert, but is kinda pricey for dinner. You can also find a bunch of great restaurants on 14th Street, from Thai to seasonal/rustic menus. For going out - I always recommend the National Zoo, it's great during the week when no one else is there. The National Galleries (art museums) are both pretty awesome, as is the National Portrait Gallery, Building Museum, and all the Smithsonian museums along the Mall. The U Street corridor is great for walking around and window shopping. You could also go see the China clay warriors exhibit at the National Geographic Museum.

  4. walk a few blocks up at check out U St! Marvin is a great restaurant/bar, as is Coppi's (organic pizza, yum). Duke Ellington's childhood home is nearby, as are a bunch of other jazzy landmarks.

  5. pizza paradiso on P st. just off the circle = BEST pizza and best beer selection in the city. Millennium Arts (?) on U St. has an incredible selection of mid century modern furniture and accessories, Rice on 14th = INCREDIBLE Thai food, MMMMM Cupcakes at CakeLove on U Street are a must, and you should try to go to a couple museums - they're all free and some may be open late certain nights of the week. On Friday's they do tours of the Kennedy Center and then there's wine/cheese/free music afterward (this may be seasonal), Oh - and good stuff eatery on capitol hill is great too. Wow. I love DC. I miss it so much (used to live there). Have FUN.

  6. For art within walking distance, check out the Phillips Collection at 21st & Q, but be aware that they charge something (over $10, can't remember) for the special exhibition, permanent collection is by donation during the week.

If you can get work to pay for food, you should try Restaurant Nora on Florida. All organic, sustainably-sourced, delicious food and kind service, but it is pricey.

Breakfast: I recommend Marvelous Market on Q over the Starbucks on the circle. Love their coffee and morning muffin -- also their brownies!

If you do make it all the way to the Mall, my hands-down favorite museum is the Freer Gallery of Art (free!).
