Where does a city girl like me get a plain old wooden stump for her baby's room?
Look here, behind Carinna's legs and between the butterfly chairs. I don't mean a stump like this. Nice and all, but I am thinking a fraction of the cost should do it.... Any one? Any one? I don't even know what words to search in craigslist. (pictured on the porch of the rockreach house.)

Find a tree cutting service and ask if they have any...sometimes they'll even cut you one to the specs you want for fwee.
ReplyDeleteDid you try looking on etsy? They might have something, although it'd probably cost a little more than craigslist.
ReplyDeleteTWO HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR A STUMP?! My raised-in-an-oak-grove (literally; our house was surrounded by trees) brain melts at the thought. I don't have too much advice, unfortunately, but I commiserate with you about overpriced former trees.
ReplyDeleteGo to a firewood place and see if they have a log that they have not split yet.
ReplyDeleteOr come to my cabin in Utah and pick one up.
Hey this is Heather Boo I work at a nature center where a lot of trees have fallen due to rain
ReplyDeleteI have some kick ass stumps! there are 2 that are all yours! there are in Long Beach! At mi casa
I was just going to second Heather's comment... sorta. Call up your neighboring parks/inevitably trees have fallen and they need to get rid of them. We always have loads of downed trees after a storm up here. Also if you plan to use it as a table or stool, you'll want to dry it and perhaps seal it... because of sap and bugs etc. good luck.
ReplyDeleteWe wanted tall versions of these for our wedding, and my husband ended up rescuing some from his park. Park ranger for a husband——not a bad deal! Let me know if you have any luck with other options. Now I am sort of wanting a squat one for plants in our living room!

ReplyDeleteI just had the same issue! I couldn't find a place in NYC that would get me a stump for a reasonable price (and I don't really have the room to do this anyway) but here is the tutorial for how to strip it:

I eventually ended up with one from here:

Good luck! I love my stump!
Hey Lady.
ReplyDeleteStumps are the best.
My shop partner Jill and her Husband Matt could easily whip something up for you for cheap. Shipping from SF might be, like, $20 though. If you want to contact them directly through their wood business, Small Stump, you can at jill@smallstump.com.
a stump!!! man I've been thinking about getting a little stump too. would be super cute next to a rocker in the baby room. we've got one at Pendleton, but it's pricey too, even with wholesale discount.
ReplyDeleteif you are in LA my grandparents have a whole bunch! just hit me up! consider it a baby gift. :) for reals!
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking about this, too, and guess what I just found...
